Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin may temporarily reduce some expression lines. Assessment considers eyelid position, facial movement, product selection and risks.

Back to all services

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the movement of selected muscles. This may soften some expression lines. However, not every skin crease comes from muscle movement. Assessment therefore starts with the cause of the line and facial movement.

Op. Dr. Havva Gül Yıldız examines eyelid position and the eye area before treatment. She also asks about previous injections, medicines and health. Explain your expectations. Your face at rest and during expression helps guide planning.

The guide to botulinum toxin and fillers around the eyes explains the difference. Volume loss, for example, may need another approach. Discuss expected effects, limits and follow-up. Suitability varies by person and area.

Treatment areas and related procedures

These headings do not describe identical methods, products or outcomes. The treatment area, product ingredients and alternatives require individual assessment.

Expression Lines (One Area)

Assessment for botulinum toxin treatment of lines caused by muscle movement in one facial area.

Three-Area Treatment

The forehead, frown area and outer eye corners are assessed together. Injection sites depend on muscle movement.

Jaw Muscle (Masseter)

Treatment directed at the chewing muscle. Assessment includes jaw clenching symptoms and chewing function.

Underarms (Sweating)

Considered for excessive underarm sweating. The cause of sweating and other treatment options are discussed.

What is this treatment?

Botulinum toxin is a medicine that temporarily reduces signals from nerves to muscles. Forehead, frown and crow's feet lines are areas for assessment. However, suitability and licensed use depend on the product and treatment area. Approval of one product does not cover every injection site.

Fillers add volume; botulinum toxin affects muscle movement. Deep lines visible at rest may remain. The AAO EyeWiki explanation of botulinum toxin describes these distinctions and possible effects.

Who may be suitable?

Adults with lines that become more noticeable during expression may seek assessment. However, young age alone is not a reason for preventive injections. Brow lifting and under-eye injections are not suitable for everyone either.

Mention existing eyelid drooping, dry eyes or neuromuscular disease. Also disclose pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies and medicines. Treatment should not proceed through an active infection at the injection site.

How is it performed?

  1. Assessment: Facial movement is first examined at rest and during expression.
  2. Planning: Product, treatment area and dose depend on individual findings. Units of different products are not equivalent.
  3. Treatment: A fine needle delivers injections at the planned points. You may feel brief stinging.
  4. Review: Effects do not start immediately. Therefore, wait for the planned review instead of seeking early additional injections.

Recovery

Redness, tenderness or bruising can occur at injection sites. Avoid rubbing the area and follow your care instructions. Return to daily tasks depends on your symptoms.

Effects generally begin within a few days and become clearer at around two weeks. However, onset and duration vary by product. Many treatments last approximately 3–4 months. Discuss repeat treatment in light of your previous response and product information.

Risks and side effects

Headache, bruising and unintended muscle weakness can occur. Other effects include eyebrow or eyelid drooping, asymmetry, dryness and double vision. A temporary treatment does not mean every problem should simply be left to resolve.

Seek emergency help for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing. Do not wait with widespread muscle weakness or signs of a severe allergy either. Sudden loss of vision is an emergency. Report new double vision or significant eyelid drooping promptly to the treating team.

Consultation and follow-up

Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Havva Gül Yıldız considers eyelid function when assessing the eye area. Discuss the change you want alongside existing facial movements. Also ask about the product name, suitability for the area and follow-up arrangements. A particular expression or duration of effect cannot be guaranteed.
