What is this treatment?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It may be considered for unwanted volume, asymmetry or displaced filler. However, permanent fillers and other materials do not respond in the same way.

Ultrasound helps assess filler position and surrounding tissues. Imaging may be needed to clarify the target. Nevertheless, not every finding is caused by filler. Who may be suitable?

You can seek assessment for an unwanted appearance or prolonged swelling after filler. First identify the cause of the concern.

• Explain asymmetry, displacement or excess volume during consultation.
• Also share the previous product name, date and treatment area.
• Mention allergies, especially reactions to hyaluronidase or bee stings.
• Ask about existing material before considering new filler.
• Seek emergency help directly for unusual pain, blanching or vision changes.

How is it performed?

1. Initial assessment: The doctor first checks for an emergency. Routine appointment queues are inappropriate for emergency symptoms.
2. Product and imaging: Share previous filler details. Ultrasound may help assess location and depth when needed.
3. Planning: The doctor assesses the target and enzyme requirements. Allergy history also matters.
4. Treatment: When appropriate, the doctor injects the enzyme into the target area. Imaging support may form part of the plan.
5. Review: Monitor response and swelling. Further treatment needs separate assessment.

Recovery

Planned dissolution can cause swelling, bruising or tenderness. Therefore, the early appearance may not show the final result. Clarify review timing according to the purpose of treatment.

• Protect the area as advised; do not try to correct it with self-massage.
• Also request individual advice about makeup, exercise and skincare.
• Do not decide on new filler before swelling and the existing concern are clear.
• Seek same-day medical help for increasing redness, fever or discharge.
• However, waiting days for results is inappropriate when an acute vascular problem is suspected.

Risks and side effects

Dissolution carries risks of pain, bruising, swelling and infection. Hyaluronidase can also cause allergy and, rarely, anaphylaxis. Call for emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling or fainting.

More or less filler may dissolve than intended. Asymmetry may persist and further intervention may be needed. Ultrasound cannot rule out vascular occlusion or permanent visual injury. Seek emergency care for unusual pain, blanching, blue-grey skin or vision changes. Do not wait for an appointment, imaging or a message reply. Emergency treatment also cannot guarantee complete reversal of damage.
